OK, She could like you and be afraid for you OR she could be using this 'big, bad b/f" excuse to discreetly reject u.
Do some sniffing around; if she seems to be telling the truth, back off and wait for better reception. If she seems to be lying, ask her about it; if she still says no, find another crush (if she does secretly like u, maybe she'll get jealous if she sees you hiting on some other girl! *grin*)

That's very tough, because when guys used to ask me out, i'd tell them I didn't want to be with anyone. BUT because she mentioned her ex wanting to beat down, it sounds like she was using the other thing as an excuse so her ex wont get way too angry with her. I think she does like you, and even cares about you, that is why she warned you!
Just ask her if she atleast likes you and be good friends for now!

Woo her. Don't be aggressive, but always say nice things to her. Listen to her. Tell her how beautiful she looks all the time. Make her laugh. Cheer her up when she's feeling down. Develop a good friendship and rapport with her. After a while, she will take a second look at you.
