Everything I've read says to carry a backpack to Disney World with you. It made sense to me, so that I could carry the things I bought with me, but we're staying at a Disney resort and can have our purchases delivered for free. So does anyone know why else I would need one? What do you carry in yours?

I usually carry a fanny pack (dorky I know, but it works). In it is just enough room for a wallet, some tylenol, a guide map, some sun glasses, my cellphone, and those darn addictive Goofy Mints that I buy every chance I get. The advantage of this is you can take it on most (or all) rides (you'd have to put a backpack in a locker, and Disney lockers aren't free), and its not something you have to carry. If I put on sunblock before I get to the park, this is generally all I need.
If you have kids, it might be better to take a backpack. Also, if you feel the need to bring a jacket, poncho, extra snacks, bottled water, large camera (a small one should fit in your fanny pack), autograph book, change of clothes, or baby items, then a backpack might be a better choice.
Just remember that you'll have to carry what you bring (or pay big bucks for a locker). Maybe if everyone in your group carried a small bag, it would relieve the need for you to carry a backpack?

You can carry water, change of clothes, sweater for the night time, some snacks, etc. It's always good to have a little bag on you, especially if you have kids.

water, baby wipes, tissues, sunscreen, medications if need be, cellphone, umbrellas, light jacket, makeup for touch -ups. credit cards and i.d. medical information in case of an emergency. a small back pack is much easier than handling a purse or diaper bag ( if you have young kids) have a great time!! and remember, don't over pack!!

i would carry water bottles and some snacks.

water, snacks, camera, wash cloth (wet it, wipe off) autograph book, cell phone, plus any left over food i might have.
