What is so wrong with masturbating? I see no harm in it! I guess I am going to hell for a very long time now.

I was raised as a 'born again' christian, the sex education book that was appraised for parents in the church and (unfortunately) my only guide to sex and growing up gave masturbation the thumbs down. At that point I'd been masturbating for years and was grief stricken to learn that I was now going to hell for it. As an adult I think THEY can all go to hell, damn Roger Day and his 'Help! I'm growing up' literary abomination!

Most all of the religions I have encountered view masturbation in a negative light.
Catholicism teaches that masturbation is border line mortal sin (venial sin I think) ... Jewish teach that masturbation is not good ... Islam too teaches there are better ways to ejaculate ... Taoists & Budists monks teach that masterbating is loosing one's "Chi" (sp???) and that it makes man weak. Dunno about Hindu. Atheists laugh at people who do it and put it in funny films like "There's something about Mary".

From a moral perspective, masterbation leads you away from real relationships and makes you more self-absorbed. I wouldn't say it's really so black and white that you're going to hell if you accidently get aroused, but it's generally one of those things in life, like say smoking, that while enjoyable occassionally, has the potential to introduce some serious problems in your life if it gets out of hand or becomes a habit.

Churches will teach that it is similar to having "unpure" thoughts about sex (fantasy, thinking of pre-marital sex, etc.)
But the times, they are a-changing. See the attached directive from a Baptist church about allowing masturbation in SOME situations (not all).

Christianity does not ban masturbation. It does ban the thoughts that generally go along with it though.
