In addition to SSA, which is difficult to qualify for (check the web and phone book for Mental Health Advocates or call Social Services for a referral to an advocate, they can help with the paperwork and filing), she may be eligible for temporary disability. In the state of California it is called SDI. This would be something that was a deduction from her paycheck. Talk to her Dr, they have to fill out the forms. I do not know what is available in other states. But the Dr should.

Did she have short term or long term disability insurance through her work? If so, that should cover most of the bills (depending on her employer, the insurance pays 60 % - 100 % of your salary while you are out of work due to a disability). If not, she may want to look into Social Security Disability - you can check out their website to see if she might qualify and to help her apply. Good luck and I hope your mom gets better soon.

There is no such thing as temporary disability. She can however apply for Social Security or SSI Benefits or try some charity organizations.

don't count on SSI helping you in the near future, it takes months of paperwork, then months of waiting, then they turn you down several times, you'll probably have to get an attorney, and then finally you might get approved it took 4 years for mine to get approved, we lost the house, just couldn't hang on any longer, I can't say that the attorney did much good either and then you have to pay the attorney 1/3 of what you get

If you apply for SSI, make sure that you ask for "emergency" payments AT THE TIME OF Application - it's the only time you can, and then they'll pay her while they process the claim - it can take weeks and months for approvals.

She can file for it, but whether she gets it or not is another story.
Does her employer offer temporary disability benefits?
