I've had dogs with panosteitis and/or mild hip dysplasia. The vet I go to says that you can give a medium to large dog one adult strength aspirin for pain.
She also said NEVER to give a dog Tylenol, ibueprofin, or other similar meds because it can seriously damage their kidneys. This vet consults with the University of Illinois Vet Med program, and I trust her judgment.
But before I did anything, I'd call your vet and get their approval first.

The only safe pain killers for dogs are asprin (but it should be BUFFERED) easier on the stomach or ascriptin AD. These are what the vets I worked for for 12 years prescribed, and have NEVER had any problems with dogs taking these. DO NOT listen to the guy saying to give ibuprofen! No tylenol either.

Don't give him any medications meant for humans - it could be really unsafe. You don't want to risk poisoning him, over sore muscles that will get better.
But do check his feet to see if he stepped on a thorn or something that you should pull out.
Give him something comforting - do you have a heating pad that you can turn on the lowest setting? The warmth might soothe him. Or the drug store will have one of those hot/cold packs that humans can use for sore muscles (It's a gel pack that you heat briefly in the microwave, then wrap in a towel.) Let him curl up with that, if he wants to.
Then if he's still sore in the morning, take him to the vet and see if the vet thinks he needs a pain reliever.

Aspirin is safe for dogs. Do not give Tylenol to dogs. Glucosamine and chrondrotin was recommended by my vet for our labs. It helps joint pain and arthritis. It is also good for people!

Ibuprofen is best. One mg. per pound body weight twice a day with food. Dont give anything with aspirin. No bufferin, no ascriptin, no excedrin! Only Ibuprofen and only with food. Standard Ibuprofen tabs have 200 mg. so get ready to break up some tablets.
Sometimes they peel the bottoms of the pads off their feet like when you get a blister and the top of it peels off--ouchie. Check there and trim off any loose flaps of skin in a few days.
If the pain doesnt go away, see your vet. Heck... see the vet anyhow and say I said hello.

number one give him a good rest. a good night's sleep to begin with. next do massage his body, his tummy, his feet...with lots of carress and love...that helps too. give him enough water...and food. next time...do not over do your long hike...the dog is not = to a man's stamina...try these simple steps...and good luck to both...
