I just had my 1 year old chocolate lab spayed yesterday. The vet said the surgery went well. After I brought her home, she was very sleepy. She didn't eat yesterday at all, but today she has eaten and drank water. She has peed twice too. But this afternoon I noticed a little white droplet out of her vaginal area. Is this to be expected? The wound looks clean and she isn't licking it. She's been up walking around and is just really tired today. Should I take her in with a possible infection or is this to be expected a day after a spay?

It is perfectly normal to be droopy after major abdominal surgery, she should get better and livelier each day. If not... its time to get back to the vets office.

Take her temp. She should have 101.5 degrees F. If she is one or two degrees above that, call the vets office. Feel her feet, they should be warm like her tummy. Check her gums, they should be pink like yours are. Dont worry about the white droplet.

I hope her recovery is uneventful. Congrats on getting the surgery done. You just added several years to her life expectancy.

The main area you need to be concerned with is the incision. If the incision looks clean and not red, and she is not licking it, all is well. Sometimes female dogs get a little discharge from their vulva. If it continues, you may want to ask the vet to test her urine for a urinary tract infection or a bladder infection, but I don't think it has to do with the spay.

When my choco girl got spayed, she kept her activity really low for about 3 days. Keep an eye on her, and if she show no signs of being back to her normal self, call the vet and tell them!

I agree that you should call the vet to make sure. No harm in asking.
