In popular usage, especially among Christians, a prophet is believed to be someone foretelling the future.

I beg to differ, but even Jesus considered Moses and Noah to be prophets. The prophets of the Old Testament were both foreseers of the future and mouthpieces for God's messages. Moses brought forth the 10 commandments and Noah carried out God's command to build the ark, etc.
You're taking the current use of the word prophet and assuming it has always meant the same thing. Look at the 2nd definition of Dictionary.com.

We muslims believe a prophet to be a man who is in contact with God , and who spreads God's word.... and we have been told that Moses and Noah (peace be upon them both) were prophets by the Qura'an (our holy book) and our prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him).
Now people please if you're ignorant of Islam, please dont talk about it!! We believe Jesus(peace be upon him) was a prophet too! We believe in his miraculous birth and other miracles, we don't believe he's God or his son though, neither do we believe he was crucified... and we do believe in a second coming.

Well Noah preached to the world the whole time he was building the ark, 120 years. He told them it was going to rain. They laughed because they had never seen rain, so I guess that "prophecy" came true. Moses told Phraroh everything that God was going to do, including the death of the first born of all Egyptm from the flies to the "passover" by the Angel of the Lord, Moses told him what to expect. It happened. Moses did prophesy too, later in the desert, before He went up and saw the Holy Land, and died..

Wait, I think Christians do believe in Moses and Noah. I thought every prophet was acccepted until Jesus (peace upon him) came. I think you're confused! :[ The only prophet Christians deny is Muhammad. Jews deny Jesus AND Muhammad.
-Allah means God!
Allah is the arabic word for GOD. Allah is not the God of the Arabs, like some people say. He's the Master of the Universe. God and Allah is one and the same.
-What constitutes being a Prophet/Messenger of Allah (God)?
For the record a prophet is not ONLY a person who sees the future; they are messengers of Allah (God). They are truly and divinely guided and chosen by Allah to convey His message to mankind. Yes, you are right, this include foretelling some events of the future, but not just that! They also perform miracles, otherwise, think about it, the "skeptics" wouldn't have even taken a second to dismiss them for a fake. Also some such as Moses, Abraham, Jesus and Muhammad were reavealed Divine Scriptures -which, by the way, all except the Quran have been corrupted by mankind.
-How am I sure the Quran isn't corrupted?
Simple, Allah promised He would protect it. But if you want to argue that the same goes in the Bible and the Torah....how come they deny and accept some Prophets? If the Bible and the Torah were the same as when revealed...these Scriptures wouldn't contradict themselves so much because it'd be the word of Allah, and it'd be absolutely perfect and beautiful. Denying or not accepting the Messengers of Allah is a clear flaw only altered by mankind.
The Bible and the Torah are not entirely corrupted, but for the most part yes. That's why we only take from the Quran. Whatever is true -which is also in the Bible and Torah- it's confirmed in the Quran. That's how we know, for example that there no such things as the Original Sin. That story was distorted pretty badly! :[
Islam accepts all messengers of Allah and you can see their names in the link given in my source.
What we know from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad:
-Jesus will be returning:
There won't be any more Prophets or Messengers of Allah (God) coming to mankind. Muhammad was the last one and he died about 1400 years ago. The ONLY one returning will be Jesus. He will descend from the Heavens and will marry, have children, get old and die. He will be a great and fair judge and during his stay on Earth there will be great peace. He will live a period of 40 years after descending.
-Noah - The great flood-
He was warned by Allah to build an arc and gather his family and a pair of every living animal species for the great flood that was coming where every one out of the arc would perish.
-Moses -Parting the sea into two-
When Moses was commanded by Allah to flee Egypt with the Israelites, the Pharaoh went after him with his whole army. When he came to a dead end -the sea- Allah told him to get his staff and strike it; when he did so the sea parted into two; letting all the Israelites pass. When the last one had made across to safety, Allah closed the sea again, thus drowning the Pharaoh and his soldiers.
They couldn't have known about these events unless they had divine guidance and help.
Today's fake prophets:
-Beware of the Jinn!:
Anyone who claims today that they can see the future - psychics and such- are only being lied to because they're dealing with the jinn -devils-, whom will stop at nothing until they see us asking them for help instead of Allah. No one, NO ONE knows the future, not even the Angels, or the jinn, except Allah. Don't be fooled by the jinn that constantly whisper to us only to make you fall deeper and deeper into sin. They are liars!!!
-Say NO to Polytheism!!!:
In Islam we love and accept all prophets equally. To accept one and deny another takes us outside of Islam automatically. However, we never EVER make them like or compare them to Allah. Doing so would result in the worst sin of them all: polytheism -or assigning partners to Allah. No ONE is or will ever be like Allah; He's Unique and the Most Powerful. The Prophets, although chosen by Allah, are still only His creation.
Once we understand we are only Allah's creation and share no common traits with Him -such as being born, marrying, having children, feeding, sleeping, getting older, etc- we can grasp the concept of Omnipotence of Allah.
Learn about your Creator and His creation -mankind, the jinn, the angels. We all -His creations- possess different characteristics that make us distinct from each other. We don't have powers that the jinn possess so we're easily impressed and "seduced" into believing they're more than what they really are...just another of Allah's creations.
-Did I preach?! :[
I hate to sound like I'm preaching, sorry if I did. :[ I wish we could all be shown the light or be guided...reach out to Allah if you're in search of the truth...Only He could guide you!!! No one else. It doesn't matter if I show you the entire Quran and give you all the proof...it's still not in my hands. Free will is given to us, and we make the decisions. No one else.
Ask Allah, our Creator, to guide you. Best regards and best of wishes!!!

I'm a Christian, and I consider both of them to be prophets. I believe a prophet is someone who is called of God to be a mouthpiece for God, and they are given the authority to deliver God's message in His name.
Best wishes
