16 to 20 lb. test should be sufficient, unless you are planning on catching some monsters. If you are planning on bottom fishing, current and depth will determine the amount of weight you will need. I would start with 1/2 to 1 oz. The deeper the water or stronger the current the more weight. If there is structure such as rocks or submerged trees then using a cork becomes necessary. I prefer the red and white styrofoam corks instead of the plastic bobbers, they are easier on your line. Good luck.

Weights and a bobber help. Catfish swim deep. Also, use a heavy line. It's not a sport fish so you shouldn't care about the art of retrieving the fish. You just want to bring it in.

don't be fooled or mislead that all catfish stay along the bottom of the river. you can have a lot of luck with bobber/cork fishing in less than 10 ft of water.

20lb line is fine. i usually use a cork that will support a 1oz. weight. use a barrel swivel with about 2 ft leader. my leader is usually about 8-10lb test.

this is all general of course, depending on conditions. i've fished in 100ft deep holes on the Mississippi river and used 16oz weights with 80lb test in heavy current... and still felt under equipped. however the average fish was 15lbs and many over the 50lb mark are taken there. good luck.

12 pound test is good all around. only use weights if the currents to strong for bait. bobber not needed.
