I think that this is a tough question. Assume that you're being called this by someone who's opinion you value.

Pathetic.

Mainly because, I can handle being called Pathetic, but I don't really want to be ignorant. I'd rather be pathetic than ignorant.

Ignorant. That can easily be fixed. But pathetic is more of a general, permanent personality trait. Ignorant is just a present lack of knowledge about something. Pathetic is more who you are for some reason, and people are usually less inclined to forgive that.

I would prefer to be called pathetic, I know I'm not ignorant and being pathetic is something that is quickly changed. Also you can be smart and be pathetic, but being ignorant and pathetic is just sad.

I would rather be called ignorant, because I think that we all are ignorant about something. I think that there is no person that knows everything about everything.

Pathetic on the other hand.....

I would rather be called "ignorant" -- that can be overcome since it only means I don't know the facts.

"Pathetic" on the other hand is a personality flaw.

you mean i have a choice? pathetic indicates he feels sorry for me. ignorant means i don't have knowledge. one is (supposedly) an objective assessment and the other is a value statement. I think if I cared for his opinion, i would prefer ignorant because he could give me the information i lack.
