Do a search here on YA for questions about chihuahuas. There are quite a few and you should get lots of ideas.

Here are some sites to get you started ... enjoy your new pet.

Well, it depends on the dog. Generally speaking, some tips are... you need to make sure he/she has clean water available all the time. Feed him/her (guessing here) a cup of dry food or a small can of wet food each day (but if you feed wet food, buy some hard bones for him/her because feeding ONLY wet food can cause tooth problems). Figure out how often it requires going outside. Never give him/her chicken or pork bones to chew. If your dog isn't spayed or neutered, you should have that done, as well as a general vet check and vaccinations. Otherwise, I'm not sure what to tell you. The dog will most likely teach you how to take care of it, lol! This is a grown dog, so it's probably been trained into certain habits already!

The biggest thing is don't let him be the typical little ankle bitter. Make sure you socialize the dog with other dogs as well as other humans. Chihuahua's are known for becoming attached to one person quickly. Also potty training, behavior training, and really that's about it. I love Chihuahua's and hope to own one some day. I used to work at a petstore and I saw some of the cutest ones come in, but I also saw some of the meanest ones come in. It's all about the training and socialization.

I am no expert, but I have had dogs all of my life, (several mixes, a Pomeranian and 3 Chihuahuas), plus I watch the Dog Whisperer.

Most importantly, you need to position yourself as the lead dog of the pack. Don't let them be top dog or they will rule you. You should do some reading on this subject. It is also called being the Alpha dog. One simple way of knowing you have a submissive dog is that it will roll over on it's back when you roll it. If it refuses or tries to bite you, you have work to do. If your dog is a pup, be sure you roll him over. In fact, if he nips at you in disrespect, make sure he rolls over, hold him there until he stops struggling.

Also, remember that dogs do not see size difference. Your Chi thinks he is as big as a Roti, and will take on anything or anybody.

Love, praise and rewards should be earned, even if you only make them sit before you give it.

As long as you are the top dog, you can move forward in your relationship.

Enjoy!!!

first, congratulations on your new dog. They are wonderful companions. First off, you need to take him to your vet and have a check up. Do you know if he has his shots? He will need yearly distemper/parvo shots and rabies every 3 years. Get him heartworm checked and get him on medication so he will stay heartworm free. Get him on a good quality dog food, dont let his cute face mooch people food, he will get fat! I have 3 toy dogs and they have the neatest personalities! Take him for walks daily or at least have a place for him to run, Good luck

Your dog is not that different from you in that it has feelings and desires.he needs food and attention and love just like you do.He also deserves your respect cos he'll put up with your crap when no one else will no matter how you treat him.
Consider his feelings before you kick him outside when he has an accident or when he barks for no apparent reason.Put his needs before your own always. And show him how much you appreciate him and you'll be fine. All the best to you and your new friend.

I would suggest getting a book on owning dogs and it will answer all your questions about training, health, feeding etc.

You need to be consistant with him as far as training goes. Dogs very much want to please, but they need to know what is expected of them. It might be very helpful to you to take your dog to an obedience class.
