We are in the process of purchasing a new home. It is a brick home, but with that 90's kind of style. It is all one color and a dark red which neither my husband or I really care for. What can we do to change the look? I've seen some of the newer brick homes that look like the mortar is spread all over the brick as if it is being used as a texture right over the brick. It breaks up the color a bit and looks a little more modern. We don't want to paint, because we think we might have the wrong style of home for this. Any good ideas? We live in the DFW area of Texas where brick homes are very common.

Thanks in advance.

Start small and try to change the accents of your home. Maybe some eye-catching shutters along the windows, some window boxes or a front door that really "wows" you would completely change the look of your home.

Just a thought. :-)

You can always cover the brick with stucco but that's an expensive option. The brick needs to be covered with wire mesh to which the stucco is applied and then textured with a trowel. Cheaper options are siding - vinyl or aluminum or even wood.

Cheapest is to put up some taller plants or shrubs to cover up some of the brick.

Good luck.

i live in dallas also! our house is brick...
ivy covering your brick makes a big difference, also painting the shutters certain colors can change the look. i dont know exactly what colors, and how to get ivy to grow on the brick, but that is what google is for!
good luck to you and your husband!

Put tall plants, flowers or bushes of your choice around the house. Or why not accentuate the windows... by putting white curtain. It will create a different look.
You can also add chime just above the door.

Why are you guys buying the house if you don't like it? Shop around a bit more.

Maybe you could add some wood or stone to it.
