its driving me nuts. i was more accepting of it before, but listening to all the hateful closeminded negative things said on here its really wearing me down. I dont really want to ask anyone i know who is a christian because i dont want to insult them. Is it the same mentality that makes people want to join a cult? How is christianity or islam different then a cult? I dont understand. It seems like no one can give me an intelligent answer, cant they hear what they are saying? All i see in all of these things is ideology with armageddon for all of us built into it and zero logic. Why are you trying to kill us all? help.

I have often felt that there are a number of good things about religion. Spirituality is I believe necessary for humans. Christianity and Islam offer moral teachings too. But I am beginning to think that the bad things vastly outweigh the good things, and i just dont get it anymore. You can have those good things without having all of the bad things, why do so many hold onto the things that dont make sense, and fill us with hate. Jesus and Mohammed had some wonderful ideas and preached great and beautiful things. These religions seem to have turned into something way different then they taught though.

I am a Muslim.
bcause,
>Islam makes sense e.g. concept of oneness God (He Who created the eye of the mosquito is the One Who created the sun) , Messengers of God on the face of earth with the message of oneness of God and accountability in the hereafter, concept of Salvation through faith and deeds, concept of Prayers and Charity, fasting, etc.
>Islam is the only religion which teaches the existence of a one and only PERFECT God. A perfect God means that there is no sharer in His Nature and His Attributes:
> Because there is only one human race, there has to be one perfect way assigned by God for the human beings as a way of life. That is Islam which means submission to the will of God. "The Religion in the sight of God is Islam." (Quran 3:19)
>Islam has Practical Solutions for the Problems of Mankind. e.g. to reduce murder, rape, poverty. etc
Islam is a perfect religion which has nothing left to add or subtract. There is not a single teaching of Islam which is against humanity as a whole. All the good teachings which other religion speaks about is already present in Quran and sayings of Prophet Muhammad pbuh.
"This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion (way of life)". [ Quran 5:3]
> Islam provides salvation and path to paradise forever.
There is no compulsion in the religion; Truth stands out clear from error; so whoso disbelieves in idols and believes in God, has laid hold of the most firm handle, which cannot break; and God is Hearing, Knowing.
Al-Quran (2:256)
"If anyone desires a religion other then Islam (Allah's way of life), never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost all spiritual good". [Quran, 3:86]

1. That is how they have been programmed by their families. Just like most people have been programmed to believe nudity in public is a problem (in the US).
2. People don't like to not have the answers. It is much easier for them to deal with this concoction of a supreme being and all its contradictions, than to deal with the fact that the answer may be a big, black void of nothingness.
3. Some people honestly do not have enough scientific education to understand what answers there are in this world. Then they get some religious leader telling them it is God, and they understand authority and power, so that makes sense to them.
4. To err is human. You can't expect everyone to reason out the right answer every time.
Others, well, I guess they just have faith.

I can see where you would be turned off by some of the people that are on here...or anywhere for that matter. BUT...do you really think that it is just Christians or Islam?? Really, they are people and people are not perfect.
I am a Christian...I can not answer every "religious" question nor do I claim to know tons of scripture...I don't need to. I have faith, I know that Jesus died for me, I don't need proof, I don't need him to stand in front of me to believe it.
People need more than religion, they need a relationship. That is part of the problem, anyone can study the Bible..that does not make them a Christian or a good person. God really just wants us to love and care for one another. I will say that some of the most hurtful things that have happened in my life have been caused by people who are Christians, I do not blame God for that...I know it is just humans and our selfish desires. That is why Jesus died for us...forgiveness.
The fruit of the spirit are a gift to us...we need to use them. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control!!

I can only speak as a Christian.
It is God that Christians believe in.
We follow His son Jesus Christ because:
God requires payment for sin
Jesus paid the price for sin when He died on the cross and rose again.
When anyone receives Jesus' gift of salvation their sins are forgiven
There are many ways to know that God Jesus and the bible are real and true.
One is the already fulfilled prophecies in the bible
Another is through archeological finidng that prove the bible is true.
Also God promises that if you seek Him He will reveal Himself to you.
If you are truely interested I would suggest reading the bible for yourself. If you pray and sincerely ask God for wisdom while you are reading and studying His Word He will give you wisdom.
Hope this helps. If you want specific verses to back any of this up, ask.
Best wishes

Here are the reasons for belief: 1. people are taught this stuff from early on and it becomes such a part of their identity and worldview that to question it means to question who/what they think they are; 2. Fear of death is powerful and belief systems are tools to deal with that; 3. Somewhere in people's minds, they realize this world has no meaning and, therefore, they adopt various belief systems to give it an artificial meaning (this then becomes their worldview, etc.). Note that there is one way to resolve all of this: use belief and concepts as tools to find out -- directly -- for ourselves what's true. Only way is to have an enlightenment experience (e.g. read '3 Pillars of Zen' for a good perspective from Zen on this).

I was an atheist, but gradually became convinced of the truth of the core of Christianity.
Feel free to email me if you wish more dialog on this topic.
--
I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ (e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html ).
For scientific and intellectual evidence for the existence of God, see http://www.godsci.org/gs/godsci/evidence.htm
Cordially,
John
P.S. ssnole, thank you for your message. I tried to email you but yahoo answers bounced my message saying that your email address has not been confirmed.
