Because they have Caller ID and are curious as to who's calling from a crooked number.

Maybe because you dont know its a wrong number until they answer better question what if they dont answer and a family member has been rushed to the hospital in critical condition and someone rings from a number thats not in their phone book to let them know. Wouldnt that make them feel worse. If people only answered numbers in their phone book they might be waiting a life time to get a call.

because if you dont answer, the wrong no. will keep ringing again and again thinking you just missed the call, or are ignoring them! trust me - this went on for weeks with a love sick teenage girl and the guy she liked who had given her the wrong no, which just happened to be mine!

They don't always answer. You just can't figure out fast enough that you dialed the wrong number.

That's not quite true. I ring wrong numbers all the time and quite often nobody answers!!!!!!!!!!

no offence yea, but i feel british people have a culture of suspicion...they're suspicious of foreigners, suspicious of the neighbours, suspicious of their kids...so, it figures that a phone call from an unfamiliar number...why, it might just be the lover!!

Did you think about this question first? Some people may not have caller i.d.....some could have been stalked in the past....

probably for the same reason you do... trying to fingure out who would be calling you from those numbers that you aren't familiar with...
