not all have to be but they last longer... items like tomatos and avacados have more of a chance to ripen outside the fridge.

As a rule yes. But don't cram them in. They need space and to stay dry.

It is better to store some outside the fridge than to stack it all.

Exceptions are: Potatoes, unions, all 'fruit like' vegetables.
If you make a salad, serve it at room temperature, it tastes so much better.

I would say yes, but they need to be stored a little differently. Some need to be tightly sealed, others need ventilation (like broccoli).

Tupperware has a line of products called "FridgeSmarts" (or something similar). They are containers with openings for ventilation that can be changed according to what is stored in the container. It really does help fresh fruits and veggies last longer! I think there are some knockoff versions by Rubbermaid and the like, too.

And depending on how quickly you use them, onions and potatoes generally don't need to be refrigerated. (Although I've found my onions last longer in the crisper drawer, too.)

potatoes should never go in a fridge, squash, yams, carrots, turnips, beets, none of these go in the fridge at my house and they are fine.

tomatoes should be left out to keep their flavor better. I also don't put potatoes, onions (until after I've peeled it), garlic, and I really don't know about all others.
