Ok, so the thing is I had a job interview yesterday. I have been forewarned (3 different people) that this boss is rather "pro semite", meaning she prefers to hire Jewish people (even though the job has nothing to do w/ being Jewish).

Sure enough, during my interview, she asked me if I celebrated Hannukah (in August?) and I told her "yes, I did last year."
(which is true, because my boyfriend is Jewish, and we did. Also, if we get married, I will have to convert.)
Secondly, when she saw which college I went to, she said "oh, XXX, what a great school and so many great Jewish programs" to which I responded "Yes, I love XXXXXXX (the school)."

I also sort of hid my cross under my shirt. (I don't wear it every day and I am not very religious but I thought I might as well hedge my bets right?)

so I would like to know: do you think she believed I was Jewish? I am going to hear from her next week & I really need this job. Thanks!

Interesting spin on an old issue.

If the employer you interviewed with is in the U.S., it's against the law to discriminate against a job candidate on the basis of religion.

More than that -- it's illegal even to ask about religion in a job interview. And about age, marital status, number of children, disabilities and more.

Some interviewers try to get around the age question by asking an applicant when they graduated from high school. That's also illegal, since the date can be used to calculate an approximate age.

Unless you mentioned something about being Jewish, it also was against the law to ask if you celebrated Hanukkah, since it's based on a specific religion. (And, by the way, Hanukkah, is usually in Novermber or December.)

If you don't get the job, and if you suspect it was based on your not being Jewish, you can report the company to your local Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

But, apart from all that... why would you want to "pass" for anything that you aren't?

First of all, Never deny who you are. When you do this you deny your parents!! Second: If your "soon to be boss" finds out that you really are not Jewish after you are hired, what will that say about your character, will she treat you like crap b/c of a lie?....Then again she, should not be hiring just Jewish people. In this day and age you could sue!!

Wow this day and age they ask people their religion? Thought that was discrimination? Not american here but here in Europe we don't ask someone in an interveiw what their religion. I would report this person for this. Regardless of you boyfriend been jewish that beside the point. I would report her or the company to some sort of race board if you got that over there.

no longer purely like the morons accessible who think of so, there is no familiar "Jewish" or "Italian" look - relies upon on what area of the international a Jew's family got here from or what area of Italy an Italian's family got here from (you recognize this already, suitable?). I had an Irish chum who i could no longer have guessed develop into Jewish in a million years. you ought to flee with it purely for a little while because of the fact faster or later, while they talk approximately Mitzvah, the Talmud, Oy Vey, sitting Shiva, asking you approximately seder, orthodox as against conservative as against reformed, distinction in customs, your lack of expertise on any of those (whether user-friendly) will slip you up and out you, so as that they are gonna be offended at your deception and you'd be in greater worry than that's nicely worth. you may desire to assert which you have this super empathy for Jews and that your boyfriend is and which you will convert after marriage (or earlier??) and which you have been afraid to tell them earlier in view which you ought to experience how substantial it develop into to them and did no longer elect to enable hem down and maybe some thing such as you want you have been Jewish already (yet do no longer lie). i think of the potential boss could be inspired - i understand i could. Shalom (from a goy who develop into married to a Jew till she died.) Be ethical in this - have faith me.

um well you shouldnt try to be somethign your not, because it will catch up to you eventually if you do get the job, but be honest with your future boss, obviously your pretty close to being jewish if you plan on converting when you get married anyways and your bf is, plus im pretty sure jewish people dont hate Italians, Its not liek your German. Dont try to be something your not and if you dont get the job because of it, who cares there are plenty of jobs out there

Yes but you must pretend to be Jewish and thus not nice. You must really do your research since they are loyal only to other Jews and are not easy to fool. There are many things about them that most non-Jews do not know and that they keep to themselves. They have an extreme hatred for the goy and discriminate against all but Jews and thus discriminate in favor of other Jews any chance they get. They will most always lie about this. In private they refer to non-Jews as Goy but few of them will admit to that. So if you want to trick them your boy friend will have to fill you in which he probably won't.

Well if the cross was for your own personal belief then great otherwise if she saw it she won't believe you are jewish. Crosses are not a jewish symbol, they don't believe in Jesus therefore the cross is irrelevant. That's my two cents.

If that is the case, she is a bigot and you are fueling the fire. People should have more dignity about their heritage and stand by what they believe. That should carry more weight with a potential boss.

The word for girls that do things for money is "prostitute". Be proud of it. You earned it.
