My fiancee had hydrocephalus when he was born (water on the brain). He recently had to go to the emergency room and was transferred to a different hospital that could "better serve him" as they put it. Well we just got the bills in the mail and they total almost $7,000. He is a server, as am I, but he makes too much money to get help (says the one hospital). On average he makes $35 a day. How is this too much! We need help but I don't know where to get it. We live in Tuscarawas County Ohio. Please help us!

Social Security Disability will not approve him because he is currently working.

If you were seen by my physicians, $35 per day in income (if you provided documentation) would allow you to pay nothing. It's probably too much to get Medicaid, but it's not too much to qualify under many financial assistance programs that are provided by the hospitals themselves. The key is to ask for an application for charity care from every provider who sends you a bill. Then fill it out and give them all the information they ask for.

People will tell you that the hospital has to accept whatever you pay if you pay regularly, but this is a myth. You need to contact the Patient Accounts department at the hospital and preferably go there and talk to someone face to face. You do not want this to be hanging over your head.

you would need to file for social security disability, Thing is in order to do this he needs to be making less then $860 a month. Right now he is not considered disabled because he makes more then that. That is the only benefit program that will give him income. With the income he would get title 19 (once he applied) which would cover medical expenses in the future.

Its crazy all states have different rules. Try going to your local health department/ assistence office. Don't go to SS office they will not help you do anything. The hospital that he was amitted in should have some kind of grant that help people cover what they can not pay. A public hospital that is.

Call the hopsital. Most are required to provide a sliding scale/poverty discount. They can send you the forms to fill out for that.

Also look up HCAP for more info on low-income med bill help.
