I have plugged the camcorder to the pc by its USB cable, but it will not recognise the camera. I have also tried putting the 8cm disc in the DVD drawer, but it tells me to insert a disc.

Yes you have to install the software disc for it to recognize the camcorder. Your camcorder should have came with a disc. If your disc is not working in your cd-rom, then you need to contact the manufacturer and get a new copy.

Your computer needs drivers so that it knows how to talk to the camcorder. Also, you need to make sure you have the proper software installed (it probably came in the box with your camcorder). Otherwise, buy a Mac.

thats the exact same thing that happened to me with my pannasonic dv-c camcorder, i finally figured out that i needed to use a firewire connection to transfer video from my cam to my pc, look and see if your manual has anyhitng about capturing video from your computer, also it that is the case, make sure your pc has a firewire jack, firewires are native to macs but have just within the past year or so been put onto pcs

You need to install the software for the camera to work, it should have came with the camera (in side it box) if you have lost it you could try the website for it although it is unlikely that you will find it on there website, no harm in trying.

Try going to your camcorder's manufacturer's website and get the driver for it from there. With that driver you should be able to get the computer to recognize it.
