It may cause some tummy upsets, at first. Sleep may become a bit elusive. Gaining weight is a real problem for some people. But none of those effects are more difficult to handle than depression itself.
Ah, the sex thing.
Yuh, that can be a definite problem, particularly if you're in a relationship. Your libido just might go into the crapper while you're on Zoloft, but again, you have to measure that against the benefits you get from the relief of depression.
And Zoloft might not be a long term solution - there are other meds, or combinations of meds, that may suit you better.
Try it, if you're suffering. See how it works for you. If it doesn't, tell your doctor you need a change.
Good luck!

Your doctor should have a copy of Physicians Desk Reference, (a.k.a. P.D.R.), or if you are in Canada it would be C.P.S. (compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties.). Either reference will have several pages of information on zoloft (a.k.a. sertraline). You can read all about it there. Your Md. could photocopy the pages and fax it to you. Or, you can google the manufacturer and look up their monograph on zoloft. It should be on the net. Pretend that you are a doctor and get that monograph. Or telephone the company and ask them to fax or e-mail the monograph on zoloft to you. You will have to pretend to be a doctor to get it that way.
Everyone is different, and we all respond differently to pharmaceuticals. That's why reading a monograph will give you all the information that you will ever want.
Doc. Dan.
usually sleep disturbance subsides in a little while. Sexual ejaculation problems affects many male users and they have to get off all S.S.R.I. medications. (luvox is the drug that causes least of such problems in that type of drugs) and try an atypical like wellbutrin (= zyban), etc.
Some S.S.R.I. users can go off the medication for a weekend and enjoy/ pleasure/ impregnate their partner. But you cannot do that with prozac, it requires a 4-6 week washout time..

Unfortunately, yes I have. About a year and a half ago I was really non-stop depressed. I went to a city run mental health clinic just to talk to someone and they forced (coerced) me to take Zoloft. They said it would make me "feel better" and I tried unsuccessfully to tell them that I did not want to "feel better" I wanted to be better. I caved in and took the stuff. The doctor said that there might be some side effects: mostly that I would not have the desire to have sex. That was the least of the side effects. I had the most intense nightmares, I had no ability to concentrate (I would walk into a room and have no idea why I went in that room), it felt like my entire body was on fire just under my skin, someone could ask me a question and ten seconds I would forget what they had asked me. After 3 days I threw away the pills and sent a letter to the mental clinic about how I was not helped by them or these pills. Take my advice: DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG. Find someone you can talk to: friend, clergyman or some therapist who does want to shove drugs down your throat.

Sometimes it affects your sexual performance, as in you can't have orgasms. It is really bad with Paxil, but it effects everyone differently. No other side effects I can think of off hand. You won't notice anything for two weeks when on it and then BAM!!! you will be like....wow...life just seems kind of different. It is very weird. But if you are severely depressed, it may help, but this should not be used without getting help for your depression from a professional consular.

My son was on Zoloft and it was very character changing for him.
He is manic depressive and it put him in a zombie like state.
Caused by mixing it with his other medications for Epilepsy and Diabetes .
He was taken off them for that reason and prescribed another that works well
Please consult with a
pharmacist as to side effects

I may be one of the lucky few, I had absolutly no side effects that I can recognize. I'm still on it along with Wellbutrin and in combination they were very well. It took a few weeks for my mood to improve. I do notice a reduced range of emotion, it is nearly impossible for me to cry now. This may be a bit extreme, but for me, I need the balance and reduced emotions allows me to manage myself better. Things like relationships on the rocks doesn't destabilize me where in the past it required a hospital check in.

I had a friend that took Zoloft. Her chief complain was that it messed up her sleep and made her gain weight. It did help her with the depression.
