I just adopted a Scottie a week ago with a HORRIBLE mouth ulcer, in the gum below the bottom teeth. I did not notice it until 1) the foul smell and 2) little spots of bloody dschg on pillows, linens, etc. It is about the size of a quarter. She eats well, is happy and playful. I feel no nodules in the head/neck area. I can't afford a $3000 vet bill. I bought some holistic immuno booster medication and vitamins at the local pet supply. I don't want her to be in pain or ill. Suggestions anyone?

Ulcers In Dogs Mouth

Ulcers in the mouth are very painful. It is very true that ulcers can be caused by B12 deficiency, but also Zinc, Iron, Folate Ferritin and Magnesium. But this is unlikely if it only occurs periodically. Women who gets mouth ulceration usually state that they appear with their monthly cycle (and this maybe the cause of the iron deficiency). When prescribing for ulcerations, we always try and avoid the use of oral steroid and gels like Bonjella, as this slows down the healing process. Cholorhexidine Digluconate (Corsodyl) works very well or if you are into alternative therapies Propylis (bees wax) from health food shops and apply as a gel over the area has been proven to cut the healing time of ulcers to 2 days. Hope this helps.

If you just adopted her from a shelter, I would contact the shelter. Often times they will have their vet take a look at an animal you just adopted, for free. You can then know what the problem is more clearly and go from there. It could be just a mouth/teeth cleaning that she needs that is causing an infection or it could be something more serious. You do owe it to the dog to take it to the vet to at least have it checked out. That's what being a responsible pet owner does.

A vet quoted you $3000.00 for a mouth ulcer??? If yes...something is very wrong here. Go to another vet, or go to a vet that will let you make payments.

salt water applied with a cottonball several times a day and even peroxide applied sparingly (not enough to swallow) a few times a day will help. and unless they decide to replace your dogs entire lower jaw with a prostetic one your vet bill wont be 3,000$

that is an abcess(infection) not an ulcer, you need to take the dog to the vet to be put o antibiotics to clear that up.
