For starters, every make of car has its good and bad points. The Sonata is popular because a) it's cheap, b) it's easy on gas, and c) it's relatively cheap to insure because it's a commuter/kid hauler/grocery hauler/second car type of vehicle.

Some bad points:If you are going on a long trip it will beat you to death due to its smaller wheelbase. It's not a luxury touring car by any means...it's main function is short hops in town, etc. Also, it isn't the best car for a tall or large person. I for example am 6-5, so I can't even get behind the wheel with my long legs. (Found this out when I tried to rent one at an airport) Someone who's heavy might have a similar problem. Also, they might say that this car will hold 5 people...uh, no. Not unless the 3 in back are all kids or midgets. 4 adults max, and it will be tight at that...and again, someone my height wouldn't be able to fit anyplace except the front passenger seat, maybe. Now, perhaps these situations don't apply to you, but I thought I'd point them out.

As far as safety, any small car is dangerous in an accident, regardless of make...to be able to save money and be easier on gas, they have to engineer out more metal and replace it with plastic and carbon/polymer materials. That means it cracks like an egg in anything over a 15mph crash as a rule.

Some good points: besides the good gas mileage, etc., they also seem to be a fairly low maintenance vehicle, as long as you do regular normal maintenance things like changing fluids, filters, tuneups, etc. and as long as you don't act like you are Jeff Gordon driving at Talledega when you are driving it...it's not a racing vehicle.

My overall opinion...if it's fairly priced and you aren't going on long trips with it, it's probably just as good as most Toyota or Honda products in a similar price range. Just bear in mind what type of car it is designed to be.

I hope some of this helped a little. Good Luck

PS...who said Hyundai was a US make? The company's in Korea.

Hyundai has made great improvements in its construction as of late; however, you still get what you pay for. The interior of the car looks cheap and its resale value is not the greatest.

I say you should go with a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic to begin with. They are more depenable and they don't depreciate in value as quickly.

Buying American is not bad , but in this case I wouldn't recommend it . Once one of these cars tryed to cut in front of me and I had a dodge ram van and when it hit me it felt like I'd hit a pot hole . And she was at fault so she had to pay for her own new car and her insurance rates went up also plus pay the tickets she got from the cop . To me they look like nothing more than plastic wrapped around metal after what I seen at the accident . I say look around and check out stuff with safety experts , especially if you have Children !!

bad ~ this car has a weak engine and once its damaged thats it ~ not to mention to buy a brand new one is the equivilant of buying a new honda civic but you get more horsepower and a much better car ~ for a good car and something affordable stick to hondas or acuras they are easyier to fix, cheaper to run, and a have a much better performance than any hyundai

Bad.
Anything American is bad.
Go with Toyota or Honda.

Hyundai won't last you very long and if it does it's gonna require a hell of a lot of maintenance.

go to consumer reports.com and they have personal feedback from owners. But I've heard that they're awful and not to ever buy one.
