Of course it's not evil, it's just a word that doesn't mean anything that helps you clear your mind while you meditate, and honestly, as a christian, when I clear my mind like that, it helps me to be able to listen to the Holy Ghost better, so yeah, if anything, I see that word very positively in my religious context.
best wishes.

If only good and evil were that simple, just never utter this combination of sounds and you are good. It is what is in our hearts that matters, not om, or omen, or what ever. I don't personally chant or do yoga, ore a matter of choice than a fear of evil, but I wouldn't worry too much about sprouting horns and a tail if I were you (not that you are seriously worried). There are many churches where chanting is part of the expression of worship, and done reverentially, it can be quite beautiful, responsive hymns spoken by the congregation and such. As christians we have no reason to have a spirit of fear, but all too often we run around spouting this sort of ridiculous doctine. It is a real shame.

First of all the word omen isnt't evil. There are good omens and bad omens. An omen is anything perceived or happening that is believed to portend a good or evil event or circumstance in the future.
The Om (or Aum) sign is the main symbol of Hinduism.
Most religions indicate that creation began with sound-- In the beginning was the word...For the Hindus & Buddhists, Om is the primordial sound, the first breath of creation, the vibration that ensures existence. Om sign signifies God, Creation, & the One-ness of all creation.

Do you live in the South? I'm just joking as I do and I've heard similar odd statements by people about all sorts of things. No it is a soothing sound when done properly. I have gone to the Buddhist temple where they chant OM and it is resonating and spiritual. It gives me goose flesh and a soaring spirit to hear it.

Om is in reference to the Monistic beliefs of Hinduism.
Its more a reference to a higher principle/force that governs the world, rather than a deity.
Since I'm an Atheist and materialist, I would think the word is harmless.

Om means 'I am a soul'. During meditation Om is chanted repeatedly to develop soul consciousness. However, it can also be done without chanting, with the power of thought.

No problem with Ohm. Your friend is a little frightened,to suppose that she has such personal power in the universe that her chanting could be instrumental in summoning evil (if it exists outside mass ignorance of dharma)

LOL the sound means whatever you choose it to mean. If you choose to believe it is evil then, to you, it is evil. If you believe it helps you focus your mind in meditation then, it is a sound that helps you relax and meditate. As you believe so it is.

"Om" is not evil, and it wasn't the sound of the universe being created. Your misinformed friend might be mistakenly thinking of the Old Testament person, Onan, who, it is said, did a naughty thing.
