I have a spare laptop, curently running Win Xp Home it is a P3 Celeron 2.8G. I would like to try linux on it. Any suggestions on the best way to go about this, The laptop has a DVD RW and 1 Gb Ram so not too worried about specs required, would just like to know other peoples expereance on the easiest way to DL and install. I have a lot of previous experience with UNIX based systems (from DEC to HPUX!!) but being lazywould like it to be as hasle free as possible.

remember best answer gets 10, so only serious answers please!

Try coLinux. It'll run Linux at the same time as Windows.

Ah, right - missed the hassle-free bit. Go for an Ubuntu Live CD.

You don't have to install Linux, you can try it first and see if you like it.

Ask for the CD's is free, you don't have to pay anything, not even the S&H
I got mine that way but running Linux needs to know alot bout computers. When you get the CDs read them and just run the CD that is to try Linux wtout installing it. Are two CD's one to install Linux and one to try as long you want, but you cant install anything.

See the link below.

i only used linux for the first time 6 months ago,and i have found the live cds the best way to go,this means i can still have my xp operating system but when im bored i can throw a live cd in and use that for the day,i know loads of mates who use linux for web /internet usage and find it very good
one of the easiest and best live cds is slax linux http://www.slax.org/download.php,this is a 200mb file and works with allmost every class of p.c,even a pentium 2 ,with 64mbram
one of the best linux download sites is http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php,this has all the downloads for all live linux cds,and also has linux security downloads and server downloads, the site is very easy to understand and navigate
good luck with linux

I just started using PuppyLinux. It's a bootable CD with an amazing amount of stuff on it. You can install it to disk or to USB flash device, but you don't have to install it at all, you can just run it off the CD.
