My kitty makes squeaking sounds, instead of meowing, and instead only meows if he wants food. Another kitty of mine opens her mouth as if to say "meow" but makes no sound.

These are "purr-fect" little sounds made by your kitty to show you how much he loves you. Little squeaking sounds indicate contentment. The other is what is called a "silent meow" and is thought to be the highest compliment your cat can pay you. Enjoy both of these unique sounds as ways your cat is saying "I love you" and "you;re the best!" All of my cats do these same things. Also, if your cat looks at you and begins to squeeze his eyes closed, it's also a form of communication that is saying "I love you." Cats have wonderful ways of communication!

I saw this t.v. program on the silent meow actually. People think that either the cat begins to meow, then rethinks and shuts its mouth before sound comes out, or the sound is so high pitched we humans are inable to hear it.

My cat used to do that (she died about two years ago) and nothing is wrong if your kitties aren't that vocal. Each cat is an individual and has a different personality, like humans, so don't fret.

I think it means that they are very happy cats...their quiet meows sound more like a request than a demand, (unlike most meows).
Cats are cool...sounds like you have very gentle cats.

the "barking" meow is one of both curiosity and frustration-- they see something they want to inspect that they usually can't get at.
