Yeah, the name is originally English or German, and referred to someone who lived near ash trees, or worked with ash (tree). So, Ash and Ashes and Ashey all come from the same name. There's also an Esses County in Ontario, Canada.

In the United States, they're nearly all in New York state and Maryland. And there are 98 on the Social Security Death Index, again nearly all in New York, though some in New Jersey.

Hey Kaos,

The searches for Esses is complicated by the Esses counties. I did find some people with the name. There is also many references to "esses" with respect to God - I am not aware what that means, but it has to do with the old testament.

There are ancestors or very old relatives that came to the US through Ellis Island. I have an account there, it is free, so if the link does not show you Abraham Esses... ( and 24 others) Just start an account. I cut/paste one persons passenger record data, there are 24 more.

I did not find reference to many living internet forums. You could start one. Go to the GENWEB site.

A European Jewish name related to Esther:

esses
Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): metronymic from Yiddish personal name Ese, a pet form of Ester (see Esther).

Esther
French and Jewish: metronymic from the female name Esther, from Hebrew Ester, the name borne in the Bible by a Jewish captive of the Persian King Ahasuerus. According to the Biblical story, she became his favorite concubine and by her wise persuasion managed to save the Jews of Persia from the machinations of the royal counselor Haman. Her name is probably a derivative of Persian esther ‘star’.
German: habitational name from any of various places in Bavaria named Ester.
