There are basically two types of beer: Lagers and Ales. It's got to do with the yeast being top fermenting or bottom fermenting.

But lagers ARE beer.

Lager is beer. Beer can either be a lager, or an ale, depending on weather the yeast ferments at the top, or the bottom, of the vat. Beers like Budweiser, Miller, etc. don't advertise the fact that they're lagers, but they are.

"The yeast that ferments beer is conventionally divided into two broad classes, top-fermenting and bottom-fermenting. Correspondingly, beer is also divided into two very broad categories according to which yeast is used, respectively ale and lager."

**I see a lot of people mentioning "Pilsner." Pilsner is a "pale lager."

Lager is a well attenuated beer brewed in cool conditions using a slow-acting brewers yeast, known as a bottom-fermenting yeast, and then stored (or "lagered") for a period in cool conditions to clear away particles and certain flavour compounds to produce a clean taste. The most popular examples of beer brewed using the lager method are pale lagers, also known as pilsners.

Lager is a kind of beer. Your question is the equivalent of asking "What's the difference between cheddar and cheese?" or "What's the difference between sodapop and Coca-Cola?"
