I am a detective and I recently had a call from an old friend who asked me to come to his estate as he had, had a theft. When I got there he took me into his office and showed me that a painting had been stolen. When asked he said the culprit was one of three people. I asked each of them where they were when the crime took place, what they were doing and if they saw anything suspicious.
1) Bruce the garderner: W: Outside the only gate to the estate. D: Digging a flowerbed. S D: None and no-one entered or went out of the gate.
2) Lucy the cleaner: W: The dining room. D: Listening to music and cleaning. S D: None.
3) Samantha the secretary: W: Office. D: Discovered the theft and immediately phoned my friend to inform him. S Details: The window was open.
After questioning the suspects my colleague told me that on examination there were no prints on the desk, door knob, window or telephone. I said to stop investigating as I knew who did it.
Who was it and how did I know.

Yahoo! answers: I didn't explain it very well because it was running out of characters to work with. When I said 'called my friend' I meant the narrator's friends not Samantha's friend. Sorry for any confusion.

In Bruce's details it should have said outside NEXT TO the only gate on the estate. I'm very sorry. I will reveal the answer at some time between 8 and 9 pm tonight.

It was a threesome! (Woo hoo!!!) The secretary was in the office so no one could have taken it without her help. She passed it to the gardener, who put it in the flower bed "outside the only gate" for easy pickup later. Then, after the phone call, the maid came in and cleaned away all the evidence.

Why was Bruce doing work outside the estate? That area would not be his concern so it has something to do with him. I hope you answer this quickly because Im really curious about who dunnit!

The secretary. If she used the phone report the theft why weren't her prints on the phone?

My guess is Lucy because she was already in the house and she wouldn't have seen herself committing the crime. It'll be interesting to see the answer.
