I personally can't see much of a difference. Superstitions tend to be handed down verbally, where as religions are handed down verbally, textually, and graphically. Religions are taught very early, intensely and tend to stick. But the basis of the two are the same. What are your thoughts?

I agree. Both are based on beliefs that cannot be proved. How unlucky is it if a black cat crosses your path?

Attached is a link about the superstitious belief of heaven. Notice how there are no logical statements that prove any of the believer's claims. This makes the black cat belief look good.

Superstitions are focused upon entertainment. The idea of the various curses and such within the lore of superstition provokes excitement in otherwise mundane life. All religion is focused upon two things, creation and judgement. Even an atheist requires a sense of where things come from, and a sense of where they are going (even if that is nowhere), so one could say that religion is a product of the human's need for resolution. Religion could therefore be genetic, while superstition is mostly cultural. This is just a theory though. Realistically, superstition tends to have bits of religion in it, and religion has plenty of superstition.

I agree with you. There isn't a difference. And if religion or superstition helps you to live your life, then by all means use it. But it doesn't help everyone. Some religious people are simple minded, there fore they need to simplify things by "knowing" that all Christians will go to heaven, all other people will go to hell. I'm sure that is reassuring to them, but just because I decide it is reassuring and simplistic to believe that my hamster is secretly my guardian angel, doesn't make it true. There is no way to know whether it is, or is not true, so I don't agree with people judging each other either way. Too each his/her own. Let people do what works for them, and stop thinking you know how EVERY other person in this world should live their life. (that wasn't aimed towards you - person who asked the question)

At the very first twilight of understanding what the two are you can say that relativily there share components of one another. However, the more you look into a religion it becomes more than "superstition" and "religion" takes on a cultus status.

For example weak superstition: I step on a crack and break my mother's back. Children play at it, as adults we learn that it was just that superstitious. another one - Sew on Sunday take it out of with your nose on Monday. This is closer to religiosity a blending of religion and superstition. Yet it still is superstitition because it does not create a lifestyle a reinforceable pattern or continuance belief system. Religion as you may size it up started as superstition that formed higher and higher thought patterns then developed into myth and then to religion and then to religious fanaticism. This is the evolutionary hypothesis to all religion.

Howeve if you will look at superstition from another angle.

There is one God, and one true religion and through man's disobedience failed it, and as time went on, man took the one true religion and mixed with other superstitions such as the fear of lightening or the fear of dying or fear of the unknown. Gradually the syncretism of these additions would reduce the one pure religion of God and become many world wide religions, to which further reduction of cultus and myths superstitions proliferate and grew and grew and grew.

There is one true and pure religion that which is based solely in a relationship with God Almighty the Maker of Heaven and Earth. he is the one we truly are to fear, he alone is the one we are to dread. Whom He sent His Only Begotten Son into the world to save the world through Him, In Him was Life and the Life is the light of men.

Personally, I do think they're very similar for a lot of people. Unless as an adult, you take the time to think about your belief system, and decide for yourself why you feel connected to a particular faith, there isn't much difference between the two.

Religion is God's revelation to humanity. True religion conforms to science, it harmonizes with science. Superstition is religion without science.

Superstitions deal with luck. Superstitions do not involve judgement from God or gods.
Religion deals with the nature of God or gods and how he/they view actions.
