I always wondered about that too. If you notice, they will usually do that on a blanket or something else that they are laying on before they lie down to cat nap. I (personally) like to think that it goes back to kitten-hood, when they kneaded their momma when they were feeding. And now they think of you as their "momma". But that's just me ;-) And I have a TON of cats that take turns kneading me!

Kittens "knead" their mother's "bellies" when they're nursing to get the milk to flow. They come to associate this activity with a great sense of safety and contentment.
When a weaned / grown cat kneads on you, it's revisiting that childhood sensation.
Be proud; your cat is expressing how safe and comforted it feels with you.

kneading is a sign of affection they do that to show that they are happy with you. they normally do that when they are purring. If you have a kitten they do that because in order to get milk from the mother they have to knead. if your cat is older they do that because they are reminded of the happier , simpler times with their mother. its nothing bad it is actually good that your cat likes you.

Kneading stems from when the cat was a kitten and would get milk from the mother. It is obvious your cat sees you as her/his mother... and i am willing to bet he drools while kneading too!

Alright, the whole milking thing grosses me out here. But my boy cat will climb on me when I'm laying on the couch and stand on my hips and my side, and just keep putting one foot down, and claws, then the other, etc. Forever. Half the time he just does that, doesn't even lay down, and just runs away.

He loves you. This is what kittens do to their mother to stimulate milk production when they are nursing.
Cats do this when they are in a good mood. They are usually purring while they are doing it. He just wants some attention from you.
