It is a dominance thing.. My dog (female!) does the same thing to my cat.. they play, rough house, wrestle but ultimately the dog wants to gain control and in dog world humping is control.

If she isn't spayed/neutered, I think the answer is obvious. However, if it was that simple you wouldn't be asking. It's most likely a dominance thing, and she will most likely not outgrow it. My Yorkie did it until she was 16 years old and her knees simply would not support the "action" anymore. My chihuahua now does it to my Lab's face. Thank goodness he's a patient dog. If it really bothers you talk to an obedience trainer and/or your vet and see if there is something else you can do. Believe me, discipline DOES NOT work!!!!!

P.S. Both of my pets were neutered as young as the vet would allow it, so that was not the issue.

This is a dominance behavior. Your cocker is saying he's higher ranked in your household than your cat is. He could also be bored, which can be remedied by taking him for longer walks or playing ball with him (or any other exercise he enjoys which will wear him out).

well it's the few people here who said that it's a dominence thing that are correct for the most part. some dogs hump on things cuz they are horny and it feels good but most times its to show that they are the dominant animal in the pack. my female german shepherd does this to my male rottie and my male mastiff (all my pets are fixed) because she IS the dominant dog.

If your dog is not fixed, he is humping your cat because he needs to mate. If your dog is fixed then he is most likely doing it out of dominance. There are ways you can fix it. I would recommend to talk to your vet AND a trainer.

This behavior is actually pack mentality. In the wild dogs do that to establish dominance. It also could be because your dog needs to be neutered. Dogs are just like humans they need to express their sexuality and may express it with whatever is available (your leg, furniture, door jambs, etc...) if you don't provide an appropriate outlet.

Take him to the Vet and have him neutered. That will stop the problem and increase his lifespan by about 2 years.

That's great a politically correct dog. Not a racist, you're teaching him good. A 21st century type of dude.
I had a dog who liked to do it with my skate board. It's just time of sexual maturity. Have to get him some.

Take away the cat and you are next.
