I had a 91 mustang LX 2.3. I ripped the fuel injected engine and tranny out and replaced em with an old carb'd 302 and tranny circa 1972. mechanically everything works, but this being the first time i did a project like this, I didnt pay as much attention as i should have to the electrical system, and sensors. None of the gauges register, including the speedometer & tachometer. will things like the oil pressure sensor, etc work on an older engine like this or would i be better off wiring them directly? Also, where would the speedometer and tach hook up on a 91? to the tranny maybe?

Best bet is to get a wiring diagram, then replace part on the '72 302 with parts for a '91 302. As for the speedometer, it was cable run from the VSS(Vehicle Speed Sensor) it may or may not be able to connect. It was mechanical. All other are electrical. Other option would be find a later model trans with that type of VSS, but make sure it is not an electric trans if it's an auto. Any manual will work T-5 etc.... Good Luck!!!

Usually just speedometer/odometer to get it registered and inspected if they will actually allow the non emissioned engine in the car..

Basically the electrical guages on those mustangs were electrical and just the need to find a sender compatible with the design limits of the guages would work (basically for example, that the fuel guage has a sender that reads 145 ohms empty and 15 ohms full)

I think when you ripped out that engine, you may have ripped some other stuff you need, mainly a fuse box or a connector that connects the engine wiring to the guages.. without some time and a electrical manual that will be hard to trace.

Your original engine was the EFI 2.3L in-line 4, and the EFI system uses a mess of sensors, while the carb'ed 302 small-block you stuffed in has less than a 1/4 of the sensors- the wiring is completely different. The tach should run off the distrubitor- no problem there. The speedo should either goto the trans or the rear differential- depends on your setup- and it may still be off 5mph or so.

The gauges are electrical I believe and your new/old engine uses mechanical. You probally have to get mechanical gauges from jegs or the like and solve the problem that way

By a Haynes Book, this will show the wiring diagram, but you can run mechanical stuff, but stock gauges looks cleaner.

should have got an EFI 302 out of a crown vic or marque (usuaslly find them cheap and they are HO engs) its nmot hard and the perform and milage is better. and the gauges will work!

No problem registering it,just do it.
