My son is about to turn one in september and he is crawling around faster than ever before. I have a large mat down in our room for him to play on and he doesn't seem to ever be hurt or in pain. Everytime I look at his shins and sometimes his knees, he has bruises on his legs that look like somebody has been beating him with a stick! I know he doing it to himself while he is playing but it is okay for him to be getting so many? I don't have anything around his playarea that he could get hurt on and I am confused as to why he is getting bruises in the first place. I guess I just want to know that bruises are normal for a baby of his age...or how to stop them if they are not

He's probably just bumping into stuff when he crawls or hitting himself with toys. You know how they get happy and start banging a toy on their leg or something. I suggest putting those corner bumpers on the edges/corners of your tables.

Of course... bruises on the knees and shins are perfectly normal at this age, all the way up to about 7 or 9 years, lol! He is just getting bumps as he cruises his new environment. You only need to worry about bruising if it is in places that you know your child could not receive during play or if a bruise does not fade as it normally should (this can be a symptom of leukemia).

As long he doesn't have bruises anywhere else on his body. If he does, you may want to check with his doctor or pediatrician. If he has bruises on chest, hands, abdomen, it could be a sign of Leukemia. My sister-in-law lost a baby to Leukemia at 1 1/2 years of age. Please don't let this scare you though. If the bruises are just on his legs and knees, then that is normal since he is crawling everywhere, and toddling about.

Actually, I would check with your pediatrician and bring him in for an exam. The excessive bruising could be a sign of an underlying problem. Bruises are caused by blood vessels close to the surface of the skin bursting, and your son seems to have a lot of them. Of course, he is crawling, but that should not be causing the amount of bruising you describe. Get him in for a check-up.

Well kids can play very hard and sometims the fun and learning over ride the pain they feel (you know like it will override their need to go to the potty)

However sometimes bruising easily can be signs of health concerns. Some minor some major. I would call the Doc...........asap. It's probably nothing but at least then you will know that baby is just a rowdy boy and will get you some well deserved peaceful sleep.

A bruise or contusion or ecchymosis is a kind of injury, usually caused by blunt impact, in which the capillaries are damaged, allowing blood to seep into the surrounding tissue. They often induce pain but are not normally dangerous. Sometimes, however, bruises can be serious, leading to hematoma, or can be associated with serious injuries, including fractures and internal bleeding. Minor bruises are easily recognized by their characteristic blue or purple color in the days following the injury.

actually it may not have anything to do with him being a baby at all. some people are born with a disease that makes it very easy for them to get hurt so he may have bruises just from crawling around. i think the best thing to do is see a doctor. good luck.

If you have nothing for him to get hurt on, then it is not normal. If you send him to day care or anything like that I'd stop that and see if he gets hurt anymore, if it still happens, then you have over looked something. However, if the bruises stop, I'd hire a lawyer and sue the pants off whoever is taking care of him or in this case, NOT TAKING CARE OF HIM.

Turn your house into a huge padded room. Sure, it will probably run you a cool million, but Dr.Sears said so, and we must obey Dr.Sears. He is the God of parenting. A child should never have to suffer even the slightest pain when learning his environment. Don't forget to stress out until you need Prozac, either. That goes along with the prescribed program.

All kids get bruises but if it's as bad as you say then you should take your son to your doctor for their opinion. Bruising can be caused by a poor blood clotting response, which in turn can be caused by something as simple as a vitamin deficiency or may be something more serious.
