Poodles and Maltese tend not to aggravate allergies, or so I've heard. My ex father in law is allergic. He and my exMIL got a Maltese/ShiTzu cross. She's the sweetest little dog, snow white, and does not shed a hair. You can pick her up on a black sweater and not get one shed hair on you. Perhaps start with something like that.
Maybe ask your boyfriend to go with you to visit professional breeders. He's probably more afraid than anything. Also, there are many new medications on the market for allergies - perhaps his doctor could help him find one. If you two are serious, and he appreciates you, it's not much to ask.
Also, perhaps try and get him to tell you if he's actually jealous of the idea of you having a dog, and using "asthma" as an excuse. Don't laugh - I once dated someone who turned out to be horribly jealous of my pets. Notice I say I "once dated" this person. ;-)
Good Luck!

Dogs that have less fur are the best to have for allergies. I have had asthma all my life and I have never had a reaction to dogs. Cats though are another story. Try convincing him that dogs with little fur should not aggravate his asthma. It sounds though like your boyfriend doesn't want to have a dog and is using his asthma as an excuse. Try not to overstep your bounds with ur bf and respect him.

If you're not in agreement about having a dog, don't bring one into the house. Doing so will negatively impact not only on your relationship with your boyfriend, but will also negatively impact on the dog (who will be put in the middle of your disputes). Lots of dogs end up in shelters because they were initially brought into homes where not ALL of the family members were in agreement about having one. We recently had a gorgeous Boxer mix dumped at our shelter because the wife wanted it but the husband didn't... and the dog suffered as a result of their dispute.
We suggest that you and your boyfriend research information on hypoalergenic dogs, see if you can visit examples of the breeds together, and then make a decision on what you want to do.
And try not to "minimize" your boyfriend's asthma by labeling it "very mild". If it's enough for him to be concerned about, you, as his partner, should be sensative and supportive of his feelings and concerns

I would suggest to talk to him about whether he really wants a dog or not. If he wants one but he is scared because of his asthma explain to him that there are certain breeds that are hypo-allergic (most of the time these dogs don't shed, so consider the grooming costs). Talk to a vet and a breeder, maybe they will convince him (if he wants a dog) because they specialize in those kind of things.

Most of the time what people are really allergic to are the dander on the pet, not the pet in itself. Dander is the dry skin from under the hair, like dandruf we have. If the dog is dirty then it is more aggrivating. Keep the dog clean and make sure to clean any hair shedded by the dog daily and you shouldn't have any problems.

Have him discuss the matter w/ an allergy doc...he will surly tell you about the hypoallergenic dogs (ie min. poodles and such). these dogs dont shed, therefore you dont have to worry about as much pet dander and hair flying all over the place. and if it becomes a problem...just have your bf sleep in the dog house! =o)

my dad has the same problem, he wants one, but his wife says she is allergic! Her sister has allergies and got a shitz zu. She does not have any problems sharing a house with him.
You should not bring a dog home unless your boyfriend agrees, it would not be fair to the dog. It sounds like your boyfriend just does not want to be bothered with one around!

There are acutally "non-allergenic" dogs...as weird as that sounds.
There are a handful of breeds that don't shed. Some of them are: miniature Schnauzers, Maltese's, Yorkies, and I believe Miniature Poodles.....
good news, they are all small....
My husband said the same thing, and he SO didn't want a dog, but now that we have one.....he loves him more than I do... :)
