Jesus is the one who set up this duality, but in fact I don't believe it's necessary to see these as the only possibilities. Almost anyone would find it reasonable to protect yourself from an attacker. Technically, that doesn't qualify as "turning the other cheek." However, it's also not useful to continue the "eye-for-an-eye" frame, because it' nearly impossible to limit yourself, and eventually it becomes an unjust system.

At some point, someone is going to have to settle for less than what they feel they materially deserve in order to get something else intangible: Peace.

This is perhaps the essence of both "an eye for an eye" and "turning the other cheek." Don't take more than you deserve, and be willing to live and let live, even if you feel you've had to suffer some measure of injustice.

An eye for an eye and the world will soon be blind. So I guess you have turn the other cheek, but you can always turn your butt cheek and say kiss my a*ss. BTW, great question.

That was to tell people to extract NO MORE THAN an eye for....
thus avoiding family or tribal feuds.

Turn the Other Cheek----Every boxer does it! It deflects the punch, the punch then ""rolls off the face"" and there is less impact.

No reason for an either / or situation here.

Turn the other cheek. As hard as it is to do in the long run it is just better for you. Forgiveness has nothing to do with the trespasser and everything to do with you. It is for your peace of mind.

Jesus said in Matthew 8:38-45 Ye have heard that it hath been said, eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, that ye resist not evil; but whosoever shall smie thee on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh of thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Ye have heard that it hath been said thou shalt love thy neighbor and hate thine enemy, But I say unto you LOVE your enemies, BLESS them that curse you, DO GOOD to them that hate you, and PRAY for them that despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in Heaven: for he maketh the sun to rise in the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain onthe just and the unjust.....please read on !
