Yes, there is actually a scientific explanation. Supposedly nightmares are nature's way of waking us up when we have difficulty breathing at night. When you sleep in a position that traps your airway, the brain attempts to wake you up by manifesting fear. A nightmare often ends just before the scariest moment, your eyes open and you often sit up and scream. This allows you to take a big breath, but it also forces you to change sleeping positions so that you breathing can return to normal. It may be that you have developed a sleeping disorder. You may want to see a physician if the nightmares continue, as it could be indicitive of a more serious problem.

It is possible you are not getting enough sleep. The REM cycles of dreams can grow more violent over time if you cut them out of your sleeping patterns by continuously avoiding sleep.

More likely, however, you are fixated upon one really bad nightmare, so as a reactive occurance, it returns the very next night. If you fixate on avoiding it though, your dreams will, as a consequence, become more vivid. You could continue this, and strive to gain control in the dreamworld by remembering that this is a recurring nightmare (while you have it). Or, you could attempt to fill your day with as many pleasant activities as possible. Entertain the idea of romance with someone important. That occasionally makes a dream or two for me.

Ignore that chick. If it is a dream that is reoccurring, than your sub conscious is trying to tell you something. I had a reoccurring dream I stabbed someone, which is so not like me i couldn't hurt a fly, and what I realized is that I needed to get someone out of my life who wasn't supposed to be there, this person was draining, and i couldn't take it, so the dream where i was stabbing someone was really my best effort to get that person away from me, the best way possible. Maybe you can evaluate this dream and really think about how it applies to an aspect of your life. Once you confront this dream, head on, you'll stop having it. If it is a strange dream and you cant make any connection to it and reality, you can check out a dream book at the library and it will tell you what you need to know. I can assure you that once you find the source, the dream will stop. Mine did. Good Luck, hope I helped in some way.

I think this question would be better placed in the Psychology section. However, it would help if I knew what the nightmare was about. Was it the loss of a loved one? Or of you dying? Is it a recurring nightmare or was it one incident that won't leave you be?

I have had several nightmares of dying and leaving the person most precious to me alone on this earth. They are recurring and terrify me. But prayer does help. Perhaps meditation before bedtime would clear your thoughts and calm you so that you don't have bad dreams. I can't guarantee it'd work, but it can't hurt to try. I wish you luck!

i'm expert at getting rid of nightmares:
1. clear your mind before you go to sleep. maybe do a bit of reading (not anything scary, something like a magazine that shows how to make improvements on your home...nothing with any gossip).
2. never eat before bed...even the slightest bit of food will make you have nightmares. why? i have no idea.
3. this is kind of weird, but make sure you have no lights in your room. having to put any type of nightlight in your room will intensify your fear of having another nightmare. (yes, even adults do this...nobody said everyone over 18 yrs. old are brave lol)
4. dont watch a scary movie at night--if you're going to watch anything, watch tlc or similar. comdeies are alright too.

hope this helps!!

There must be an issue on your mind, something you haven't resolved. Why not try writing down every single detail of the dream (immediately upon waking) and then reading it through afterwards. Add to it each time you dream that nightmare and then take a look online (or buy one in a bookshop) at a dream interpreter - these really do make sense at time. Often we work through problems in our dreams, its our minds way of sorting issues out which we haven't done so in our conscious mind yet.

Try a different sleeping position. Whenever I sleep on my back I have horrible nightmares. Also, if you're taking medication that may be causing it. I once had to take medication for terrible upper respiratory infection and it gave me the worst nightmares. When I stopped taking it, the bad dreams stopped.

Good luck.

What you are eating before going to bed is playing a part of your nightmares. Do not eat before going to bed. Give your digestion system a break and let it not work while you're sleeping.
