The 'rational' answer is to do with chemicals in your brain, you get addicted to the way you feel around them so when you aren't with them for a while you start to crave them (i.e. the chemicals). The less rational answer is because you're happy, relaxed, smiling and generally feeling great when you're with them and who wouldn't feel bad when that ends even if its only for a short while.

I have read a few books on shychology. It always hurts if you don't have the one you love, or you don't have this person around. They also argue that the longing for the loved one is the force that makes us love them. Don't know about this bit though.

Usually you have a lot in common and develop a routine. With the other person away, a 'void' in your life developes. That's why the old adage 'absence makes the heart grow fonder' is so true for couples in love.
