i have a lump on top of my tooth on the gum its soft is it a tooth abcess?

It could be, the only way to really find out is go to a dentist. Don't leave it, as it can get infected and then it will be much more difficult to treat.

By the time a tooth is abcessed, it needs to have a root canal and cap to save it or have it removed (extracted).

It sounds like it. You can use a pin to pierce the lump, if pus comes out, it's definitely an abscess. Root Canal time!

Well if it really hurts then i would say yes.but you could try sticking a pin in it and if green gunge comes out then it definately is

more then likley i had one when i was 10 it was so bad i had to have my fron 4 teath pulled. go to a dentist before it is to late!

could well be get to a dentist, don't leave it if it is, it will hurt like buggery the longer you leave it.
