In general door-to-door sales lost its potency many years ago. The only reason religions can afford to work the low percentages is because very few of their salesforce get paid.

As for those going overseas, some do beneficial work, bringing food and medicine where it's needed, etc, but most will not give aid to those who refuse to convert to christianity. Is that what Jesus would do? And I cringe when I hear of christians 'civilizing' or 'educating' native people. They take away an existence that has worked for thousand of years and usually make life miserable in the long run.

I'm waiting for the time that missionaries will be working in call centers, sharing their message through telemarketing.

I find Jehovah Witness missionaries and Mormon missionaries irritating because they try to argue with you before going away. Most Christian missionaries are working in missions in the inner cities or out of the country, they don't go door to door..

So, maybe going into the third world providing education, medicine, teaching sanitary practices and farming techniques is irritating?

Sure, I don't like to be bugged at home, either, but I'd say, 5% irritating, 95% positive contributors.

religious missionaries continually leave an section worse off than they were before they get there. Missionary paintings is a rip-off that siphons 1000's of thousands of money to finance the existence of the Church elite and could pay for his or her multimillion dollar Gulfstream jets. there is not something sensible about proselytizing missionaries.

I don't believe in missionaries at all.....What gives them the right to force their religion on others!

Even in the darkest Africa...they believe in a "higher power" of some sort....just don't call him God...but they pray and worship - just like the missionaries do -

horrifying, i understand that they were taught to think that they are doing good. but if you get right down to it no matter how strong your beliefs are in something, no body knows which if any of the religions are the true religion. So since we dont really know what the truth is missionaries are really just pushing their beliefs on people and deluding themselves into thinking they are doing it for others.

I find that that have audacity which they do not realize. I need no saving. Yet, I understand it is a part of their "mission" to missionize. But I don't support it and this there are grave consequences in trying to convert people. Particularly in foreign lands, for which I have little sympathy for. That is to say I am not happy to see people killed for trying to spread the gospel, but kind of wish they would stop already!

irritating and hypocritical. if a group of muslims or carribean voodoo practitioners came to, say, wisconsin to spread the word on their religions, the WASPy christians who do that exact same thing elsewhere would have a coniption fit.
