You can claim faith all day long but facts are we did not live back then and humans lie and manipulate history because we have done so at least as far back as the recorded documents go and that's a fact. Just because a person said that transcripts or documents are thousands of years old don't mean I trust the source given the human track record of manipulation of the public. All it takes is for several key "trusted sources" to say things are authentic and then release this info to the public and then bam you have your manipulated believers right off the back. I don't trust any of those sources not only because it has the human element involved but also because they have too much control over the data before it is made public. A somewhat modern example is that science fiction writer starting Scientology. Most call it malarkey today but if it last a thousand years that could be your next big religion. To sum it up, organized MANIPULATION at its finest.

If all historical documents have had the human element of control of data before it is released along with other sources saying it is a good document then yes I am talking about those, however, I am sure at least one possible document exists without manipulation so I can't say ALL possible historical documents are flawed.

So are you saying that you would prefer a book written in modern day full of manipulation to a book that has stood the test of time and the belief and faith of many people? If it is written now does that make it true? No it does not. Everything we read in print now is not true. People forget that being printed in a book format does not make things true. The bible is based on faith, so are these other books and they have been studied by scholars. A modern day book written by a modern day person is not protected by error. Yeah we may know who wrote it and have an actual photo of this person, but that does not mean anything in the book is true. The bible is a book that has been around so long and people have read and studied and researched. You could write a book and publish a book and that would not make it true. You can go onto amazon and self publish now if you like and start your own religion. Make your book. That does not make it true. Just because we do not have a photo of Jesus and film footage does not mean he is not a real person who lived and walk on our earth. With a good marketing campaign anyone can start a cult or a relgion. The 3 major relgions exist independed of that.

Um...WHICH holy books claim (within their pages) to be written thousands of years ago? The books don't make that claim; typically it's the modern-day practitioners of that "faith" that claim (and in some cases, prove) that a document is old...for example:

It's historical fact that Islam started roughly 700 AD (that's 1300 years ago)...It's holy book is at least 1200 years old...

It's historical fact that the followers of Jesus wrote of him (and their adventures afterwards) while they were still alive...that's roughly 1900 years ago...

Just because something is OLD, doesn't make it TRUE...it's up to the person contemplating belief in a document (and/or the faith that it's promoting) to do their own research, and not just swallow whatever is placed in their mouth...

The same thing holds true for the morning paper, by the way... =)

What about the dead sea scrolls, and also the Gnostic gospels found at Nag Hamadi. Ancient texts are found on a almost regular basis, and the old testament ones are almost identical with the modern Hebrew Torah. Copying those documents are done in a very rigourous manner. Few errors have crept into the text. (the letters are regularly counted to check for errors, while the scribe hand copies the Torah text.)

How do I know what “you” just wrote on Yahoo Answers is not manipulation? If humans a consistently unreliable what does that say about your comments concerning reliability.
PS – next time you are at the British Library in London, why not check out Codex-Sinaiticus (4th century Bible), or even their Gospel of John fragment from the 1st century! For the record we DO have accurate (non-manipulated) biblical source material.

Excellent! That's why knowledge is infinite because it originates from an infinite source - Infinite Intelligence aka God. And that's why religion was invented, IMO, to capitalize on limitation. In every religion you will find it...it's the way of the "world". Now, don't get me wrong, limitation is quite different from discipline. Limitation seems to be far-reaching, encompassing with no respect of persons, while discipline is best used in a form tailored for each individual. For example, drinking wine may be very bad for me but an excellent blood thinner for my grandmother - dig? At the end of the day, everything is everything and it is what it is. Peace...

I don't believe in the Lord because I read the Bible - I read the Bible because I believe in the Lord. My believe came first and it did not come from "church brainwashing" or manipulation. I felt the presence of the Lord at a new church and in a time of need. That presence (a feeling I cannot explain to someone who hasn't experienced it) helped me to believe in the Lord. I was then led to the Bible to become more familiar with the Lord. The Holy Spirit helps me to know the Word of the Lord is the truth.

You can't prove the bible wrong. I would recomend the book "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel. He WAS an Atheist who set out on a seven year journey to prove the Bible wrong. He is now a Christian! The book is all about his journey. Also I feel people try to prove the Bible wrong because then people could do no wrong and not feel guilty about the things they do. They could live however they wanted.

I believe it because my bible says it was written by the inspired word of God by men that God chose to write it, and also If you don't believe the bible was written by inspiration from God then you don't believe the words written in the bible that say Jesus is the Son of God, and you don't believe that the only way to get to heaven is to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ then you have missed Heaven. So what is left for you in the end. Hell, my friend. And In Hell, you shall lift up your eyes and believe, but it will be too late. I hope you find your way.

"but without faith we are nothing!"

I'm sorry I just had to reply to that, to simplify this:

I don't have faith, and I am something and lead a productive life!

Please think before answering a question like this.

Back to the question though:

We don't know, you are very right with much of what you have said.
