I think you'll have the most luck if you look for a mixed-breed. That way, you can get a retriever-mix, pointer-mix, or setter-mix that's smaller than a pure-bred, yet still has some great hunter qualities. It sounds like you know what you DON'T want, so just stay away from anything that has that, and look for hunting breed mixes, and you should be good.
The best resource is www.petfinder.com. You can enter the qualities you're looking for as well as your zip code, and it'll bring up shelters in your area that have dogs matching your criteria. Then you can go visit the dogs and assess whether or not they're a good match for you.
And don't think that a mixed breed might not be as good of a hunting dog. So many mixed breed dogs are super smart, hard-working, loyal and eager to please. Good luck to you!

Probably one of the spaniel breeds. Are you looking for a flushing dog (English Springer Spaniel or Field Spaniel maybe) or a pointing dog (Brittany). Or maybe a retriever (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever). If you're looking for a hound that's a little more difficult since most of them are short-coated, but there's the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen.
BTW, the poodle IS a hunting dog. They are a water retriever. In Canada, Standard Poodles can compete in the Working Certificate tests with other retrievers and several have gotten hunting titles.

A Shiba Inu is a good one- the right size and coat for you. Not a scrappy dog. My husband and I saw one we liked, but it was too timid, so maybe not good for hunting. Our Corgi is medium- thick coat- good in winter and summer- not scrappy- very intelligent, but we don't know how well of a hunting dog she would be.
Just a few suggestions.

Try the Spaniels. Are good all around hunters, very loyal, hardy, and easy on the eye. Come in different sizes. Had a cocker that lived almost 18 years. Used him to hunt squirrells & rabbits and espescially woodcocks.

A well bred, well trained Brittany spaniel might fit the bill. They're medium sized and good hunters. They also come in a long-coated version (as opposed the short haired one that is so often seen.) They can handle almost all temperature variations, and they're not constant barkers.
Check into the Brittany spaniel breed and see if it might fit your needs.

Try an English or Irish setter. Tehy are great pointers and medium size. Very passive- don;t bark too much. Also, they have a thick coat.
Good luck.

ooo gosh, let me see...
Flat-coated retriever? They are kind of hard to find but they have a coat, wont bark, hunters, pretty much med sized, females are smaller, winter/summer good.
I would say that, and of course my fav dogs are the Goldens but you said you dont want one. I think you should they are the nicest, easy to train, loyal, hardly bark, good hunters, tolerates weather well, great dog!
