to read .pdf files. This format is used so that people on any operating system will see the same thing because it is like a picture. Basically, what the creator of the file sees on the screen is exactly what the other person who receives this file will see.

The Acrobat Reader program (now just called Adobe Reader) is available as a no-charge download from Adobe's web site, and allows the viewing and printing of PDF files. It is a major component of the Adobe Engagement Platform, and is widely used as a standard format to display text with a clean visual appeal.

Whilst a lot of good answers there, I don't think anyone has acctually stuck to your question.

You know when you create a Word Document, and send it to your friend, one of 3 things could happen:
1) Your friend opens it and makes changes
2) Your friend does not have Word, so cant read it (I get that a lot)
3) Your friend may open it, but the text layout has changed or is not as it was.

So not only does it allow anyone on any operating system to read a document, and to keep it looking the same on all viewings, it also protects the author from having changes made to their document. Whilst pdf docs can be opened and printed, they cannot be edited.

Common uses I have seen include:
Application forms
Information requests
Brochures
Leaflest
Product guides

You use Adobe Reader to be able to read documents.
1. You download it for free.
2.Then, when you click on something that requires Adobe Reader to read it, it will appear on the screen in a readable fashion.
3. Adobe works in the "background," so when you click on something that requires Adobe, you do not have to click on Adobe, it just automatically works for you.

Adobe reader reads PDF files. When you open a program that requires Adobe, if you have it installed, it automatically activates.

I use professional for creation of medical documents. You can default values, give list to choose from, make an answer be required, as well as needed calculations for dosings. It is really quite helpful.

Go to adobe site and download it first... it updates automatically once installed. It enables you to purchase documents and books online (ebooks etc) and download them and read them and even save them to a CD.
