I've heard that Westerners are barred from travelling to Saudi Arabia unless they are of the Muslim faith, yet 20% of Saudi Arabia's population is foreign born, mainly Western workers. How does this work? Also, I hear that only Muslims may enter the cities of Mecca and Medina. How can they prevent non-Muslims from entering these cities? Just curious.

The answer lies in your query: "Westerners are barred from travelling to Saudi Arabia unless they are of the Muslim faith,"

How would anyone KNOW what faith we are?
Would they check for tickets, and check your faith?

It is not an issue what your faith is. I know of people who do go there so what you've heard is a rumor started by a rumormonger. I don't know anything about "barring" people from entering certain cities.

the situation interior the middle East is in a level of turmoil. there has been an tried rebellion in Saudi Arabia which has been ruthlessly suppressed. there might desire to be extra. There are strict protocols somewhat for females. A females could on no account be seen in public with any guy different than for her husband or her brother. females shouldn't force a motorized motor vehicle. adult men and females could dress modestly - meaning no shorts or perhaps short sleeved shirts or blouses.

You can only go there to work or to visit westerners working there. No one that is not a Muslim can go to the two holy cities. If they do so and are caught ,they would be beheaded.
