First off, you have an iDrive equipped BMW so the best choice is the BMW iPod adapter, which costs around $500 installed. If you're reasonably competent with tools you can do the job yourself and save $150. The adapter lets you seamlessly interface with your iPod and its playlists via the iDrive controller.
Since you paid over $70K for your car, don't cheap out and get an FM modulator. FM modulators can only produce frequencies up to 16 kHz, well below the max 20kHz that your iPod can reproduce. They're also ugly and a mess of wires. See the review of the interface in my list of sources below.

500 to 1000 dollars for a ipod jack!!!!!! ROFLMAO!!!! for 500 you could get a way better radio with a 16 band eq(better sound adjustment), hi pass/low pass crossovers, Time alignment(controls the signal that goes to the speakers to make it sound like your in the center of the car), a mp3 compatable cd player, Bluetooth wireless (hands free cellphone operation, comes with the mic) AND a unit that allows you to not only listen to your ipod, but control it through the radio with the wireless remote, veiw the song information on the radio AND charge it so when you get out of the car you have more juice than when you got in and pluged it up. Plus the signal is WAY clearer than the those crappy FM transmitters and its safer because you dont have to keep messin with the ipod while driving.

or you can use the ones that have a cigarette lighter adapter. Are you sure you dont have one? My 2005 330i does, it's inside the center console.
