Why do people rave about the shopping in Bangkok? Are the deals really that good? What kind of deals will I find? And what about the dollar-bhat conversion rate?

Like what kind of stores/products do they have? Any high-end, luxury goods?

You have to go and experience it yourself. Clothes can be cheap, good quality at that. Imagine a T-shirt for US$5, and the price goes down if you buy by the dozens, and even more if you buy by the lot. It can be as little as US$2 a piece. From the clothing wholesale centre.

Household products like towels, napkins, etc. You can find these in the weekend market. Price? Much less than half of the cost that you will buy in your country.

Are you into art decor? Antique decor? Imagine getting a piece for US$50 for a large oil painting, not a repro, Or an antique-looking garden decor? Or for a marble statue?

If you are into branded luxury goods, there are big malls in the city centre carry brands like Gucci, Prada, Chanel etc. You find these boutiques there, and no they are not copies but the actual stores.

Price will definitely be better, especially during the Thailand Sale period, usually between June to July each year. These goods will go on dicounts of up to 40-50%.

This year's over, maybe you can plan for next year. You can contact me if you want more info. Or if you are looking for certain items to buy in Thailand.

Depending on where you're from many items do seem like a bargain. Some of the more popular ones are Patpong (tourist trap), night bazzars (tourist trap), and MBK (tourist trap). LOL

Kidding aside....

If you're a foreigner, they will hit you with a higher price than the locals. If you can bargain, they may bring the price down. However, I found that you get what you paid for. Other than novelty items, I can't say that you get your money's worth.

As far as high end scale, there is a shopping center called the Siam Paragon, but with the prices that they charge, I'd rather buy the goods near where I live. With the same price, it's much more convenient to get A/S or exchanges.

Baht conversion is about 37/38 baht per US dollar.

It's the best in the world--everything is available. The night markets are exciting, fun and great prices. The malls are huge and fancy, yet still inexpensive. The Saturday market is a million people and a million and one things for sale. You can bicker over prices most everywhere. The entire town is electric and goes 24/7. A great place to visit but don't try to do it in a few days---a week or two at least.

Kao San Road is a major market in Bangkok, and if you are a world traveler, it is worth going there for a few days to shop. There are some great brand-name items for a fraction of the cost. When I was last there, the rate was 40-to-one. Great for everything. You can have suits made, buy jewelry, clothes etc.!
