My DVDs play so quiet I have to turn the volume knob up as far as it can go. This is a big problem when I forget to turn it down and the next thing I hear scares the crap out of me. I use PowerDVD and it seems to happen on my PS2 and Xbox (both original and 360). Are DVDs just naturally really quiet? If so,what can I do on my PC to fix it?

PowerDVD volume is directly connected to system volume, which is all the way up.

Check the setting to see if there is a "midnight mode" or dynamic range adjustment. What you are experiencing is true to life dynamic range in movies.

When set at a Dolby reference volume level, your system will recreate a whisper as intended but will also recreate a loud explosion as intended. Real explosions are loud so, your system will be loud!

While this is great for those of us that own our own homes and don't need to worry about disturbing others, it can be a challenge for apartment dwellers or late night viewing when others are sleeping. Changing the settings as described above can help - provided your system has these settings.

Side note: Lots of folks are surprised to find that often the reason they turn up a movie is to hear dialog that they are having trouble understanding. In many cases these people are listening through the TVs speakers which have very cheap speakers and cheap amplifiers driving them. The amount of distortion inherent in even the best brands of TV speakers and amps makes it difficult to understand dialog.

Bottom line: investing in a better home theater receiver and separate speakers not only gets you a true theater experience but also helps with hard to understand dialog.

most dvd player programs (including media player) have internal volume controls - make sure that it's not halfway down on the program itself
