A lot of people on this forum like to split hairs over this word. Yes, technically 'America' and 'American' make reference to the entire Western Hemisphere. But people shouldn't get all upset when the word American is applied to citizens of the United States only. When radical Islamists chant "death to America," do you really think they're referring to El Salvador and Haiti as well, or do you think they're talking solely about the United States? Even in Central and South America the term 'Americano' is synonymous with "gringo" in that they use it to refer to citizens of the U.S.
