Paint probably won't stick, you could try buying some laminate at home depot and resurfacing them or tiling over them (be sure to rough up the surface of the formica before doing this). Tiling is pretty cheap and easy to do so long as you plan it well, I did my own counters that way.

formica doesn't take painting well. and yo might as well remove the metal strip, clean the area aaand apply a thin strip of counter topping sealing compound. It' is really bath and tub sealent and is great at shedding water.

It wont work painting it, If you have a metal strip its probaly around 25-30 years old! I say its time to replace it.

Yes - go to home depot or Rona and get Malamine paint, it can be tinted any colour you wish, it is just tricky because you have to prep it VERY well, or your results will be undesirable.... but i have seen it last up to 10 years..... it is pretty inexpensive.

We use re-surfacing companies in the Apt. Business. Not very expensive and they can customize the colors and pattern.
