I think taxing churches should be seriously considered . Many churches have property beyond congregation needs, Some churches engage in commerce and politics. Some churches are very wealthy. Others are not of course but exempting Churches from taxes gives them a a special benefit which others do not share in. Many churches do not perform any charity work or servicee.and they often keep far more property off the tax rolls than they really need or can use

No. The church is built on dollars that have already been taxed. That would be double taxation. Being non-profit, they help the community, helping out the welfare programs, etc. Personally, I think the church could better monitor the indigents and should totally take over the welfare system.

Clergymen who are paid to be a minister still pay income taxes like everyone else. The church itself though usually has tax-exempt status because it is a non-profit organization.

no, taxes have already been paid on the money you give to your church, why should the government get another tax off it? What we give our churches and pastors is out of what we have left.

I don't believe so. They are not in business for profit. Therefore, there are no profits to tax. (Though you may wonder about some church leaders sometimes.)
