The North suburbs are generally the nicest, however even the 'good towns' have good and bad areas. For example, a town like marietta has million dollar homes and a few miles away it is close to being a slum. As a whole, north fulton, east cobb are good areas for someone who will be working on the nw side of the city. As far as traffic though, it takes 25-45 minutes to get anywhere during rush hours. Another poster mentioned woodstock, that is a decent area. If you have to get to atlanta though during rush hours, you had better plan on it taking 90 min. Off hours it would take 25-30 min. When I lived in apartments, I lived in Roswell off of Holcomb br road. That was a nice area with alot of young professionals. Also, alot of young professionals live in sandy springs or the vinings area (smyrna / atlanta border), however you will pay through your nose to live in one of those areas. East marietta is nice, west marietta is not. My last apartment was Amli on Roswell rd which was a good apartment. Post apartments are also pretty good in this area. As far as shopping and restaurants, don't worry about that, they are all over. As far as crime though, it is just as bad in the wealthy areas as the poor areas. The criminals are smart enough to realize that stealing from the rich is more rewarding than stealing from the poor!!

RE:
What are some nice suburbs around Atlanta?
My boyfriend and I are looking into moving to Atlanta from New York. He will be working in NW Atlanta. Does anyone suggest a nice suburb within 20-45 minutes of Atlanta? I would like an area with very little crime and lots of shopping and restaurants. I have been doing tons of research and they...

First, welcome to Atlanta. In reading many of the previous messages, the impression is given that the only "nice" suburbs are only on the northside. There are considerable nice places intown, such as Castleberry Square and Atlantic Station that are near places to eat and shop. The main downside of living north is the traffic. A difference of 15 minutes or less in your departure time from home could have you in gridlock or not. Cumming probably has the amenities, but many days, you're going to be sitting on GA 400.
There are levels of crime everywhere; but you need to find a neighborhood or a community where the citizens are actually engaged in what's going on. The two of you need to decide the absolute furthest that you'll willing to travel.
Gwinnett?? (below) Ask anyone in ATL about the infamous Spaghetti Junction. But you guys may have a high tolerance for traffic gridlock.

Kennessaw, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs - probably in that order. Kennessaw is a bit farther than the other two, however, still within 45 minutes in the right time of day.
Actually, the part of Dekalb County near Emory University (just east of Atlanta) is pretty nice as well.
If you live and work in the right areas, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, and the Emory area can be good because they can get you really close to the Marta rail system. (the public transpo isn't so bad when you can avoid the bus).

I lived in Woodstock which is about 25 minutes from downtown Atlanta (traffic allowing!). It has all the shopping and restaurants you want! I lived there for almost 10 years and can answer any question you want. I've lived in the Atlanta area for more than 20 years. I also have my house in Woodstock for sale; so, if you're looking for a place to live, I'd recommend it! There is an apartment complex next to the subdivision that is pretty nice too, if you're looking for that. This is my house for sale/lease:

Gwinnett County, Is the place for you and your boyfriend. I lvie in Gwinnett. It has Gwinnett Place Mall, it only 45 minutes to major places. It doesn't have much crime except Norcross area. Marietta is filled with Crime; DeKalb is filled with corruption. Sheriff elect Derwin brown was killed in DeKalb county and the co-conspirator was not charged. Gwinnet has the best schools system and is the richesty county. Celebrities such Lil Bow wow,
Mike Vick, T-boz and Chili and others life her. Beause some many celebrities live in Gwinnet, Police response is faster than in "poorer counties" I have lived in Gwinnett for 5 years and I never had to call the police. The only drawback is expensive housing which can be taken care of. I used to live in DeKalb county but the apartmetn I lived in was notrious for drug dealings
Please feel free to email me: tiger_9885@yahoo.com
Even, if your not in gwinnett than i wish you the best
