If you want an inside dog, something smaller. Be aware that even most small breeds still require a ton of excercise. Shibas are a fairly active dog, very loyal and protective. Do some research before you decide and decide how much dedication you have towards meeting the dogs physical and your financial responsibilities.

I have a Brittany....most people picture them as hunting dogs but they are very good companion dogs also.....they get to be 30-40 lbs. They do need a lot of exercise or they will drive you nuts. They are very loyal and not prone to to many health issues. They are also very hardy dogs and love being both outside getting dirty and relaxing on the couch....so just do some reasearch....I seen someone else mentioned the quiz on the AKC web site...that is a good idea, it might help you find a dog that will fit you lifestyle.

Gosh, think about you first.
How active are you?
How much can you spend?
How much time can you spend with the dog?
How much exercise will the dog get?
How much are you willing to groom it?

If you go to www.akc.org, you may be able to take a quiz to help you determine what breed is best for you.
All dogs will have some degree of health issues as they age. Larger dogs tend to have shorter life spans.
I had a Newfoundland for 2 years (BIG DOG) but they have the most docile, calm temperament of any dog I've encountered.

Best wishes to you and your doggie search!

I would try something in the Terrier breed. They are hardy dogs and most terrier breeds don't grow much over 40 lbs (some do though so be careful!) They have good temperments and not alot of health problems.

Shiba inus are good, great size and don't bark. Try looking at the long hair chihuahuas, they don't lool like the reg. bugged eyed spastic ones.

I have a Minature American Eskimo, he is an inside/outside dog. Full grown will be between 10-15 lbs. He is beautiful, and happy dog.

No doubt about it in my mind . . a Border Collie.
My Meg is 2 years old and such a clever dog and great companion. Even my wife loves her to bits and she was always a cat person.

A female Boxer. The size isn't too big and Boxer's are the most loyal, people friendly dogs you could own. They act like clowns.
