I don't think they always do but in my case, the phrase rings true enough unfortunately. I also know of cases where it's the bad guy who gets the girl because of that "special something" he has and that even if he's severely troubled or dangerous that she'll "stand by him".
I do know good guys who got the gal and I'm thankful for that fact and glad for them, that they are proof that nice guys don't always finish last.

they don't finish last, they just don't get any attention when they come in first cause there is nothing interesting to hear about them afterward. people don't care about the good things other people do, but they do want to know all of the bad things. that's why whenever a bad guy does something good, he gets attention while a nice guy won't get any.

Here's another answer, if you are nice then you don't have much to improve on. It seems some women like to change guys. Indeed all people change a little in a relationship. But IF she is directive, and you don;t need direction (i.e. directed to use good manners) then you are not a challenge.
Some women want to conquer men as well. Men conquer differently than women.

Because they are being saved from all of the superficial women that would not make a decent partner in the first place.
When the right woman comes along, nice guys finish first.
It is hard to believe when you are 18, trust me, it happens. I am 42.

maybe they are in the wrong race? (ie, going for the wrong kind of girl) i have a nice guy, he finished first...or how bout this..quit running the race, let the girl find you! you always find something when you're not looking.
